Why Am I Getting Ulcers After Taking Nexium?

Hello Dr. I am a 34 year old male. I had an endoscopry performed on me about a month ago. My GI doctor told me that I had 3 ulcers on my esophagus and placed me on Nexium once a day. The nexium worked for the first 3 1/2 weeks and then it seemed like its completely stopped. I continue taking everyday in the morning without any relief. I called today to schedule an appointment with him for next week. I am wondering if he will tell me to take 2 pills a day or are my symptoms simply uncurable. I have been having right and left shoulder blade pain as well.. what do you think is gong on?

Hello,

Since you have been diagnosed of having three ulcers in your esophagus after endoscopy, the cause should be treated. The ulcer can be due to infection (H. pylori), drug induced, etc. Your treating doctor should give you antibiotics to treat bacterial, viral, fungal or parasitic infection. He should stop all those medicines that may trigger the symptoms and make them worse.

Nexium is a PPI used to treat stomach and esophageal problems. It relieves heartburn, difficulty in swallowing and prevents ulcers. You can continue to take it. GERD may cause pain or discomfort in the shoulder blades. Get GERD treated. Other medical conditions that may cause similar symptoms are poor posture, long working hrs in the PC, overuse, muscle strain or fracture / trauma, etc.

You may visit an orthopedics, get clinically examined, get X-ray / CT / MRI done to detect the cause. Avoid taking food that triggers acid reflux, quit addictions if any, prefer taking boiled food over spicy food(for 1-3 months), maintain healthy BMI, stay well hydrated, avoid constipation. For relief you can take antacids and Acetaminophen, one SOS when required.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
