Why Am I Having Lower Back Pain After Surgical Abortion?

I had a surgical abortion under general anaesthetic on 15th May and have since suffered from lower back pain. Some days its more intense than others, some days its unbearable. Is this linked to the abortion? I ve mentioned it to my GP several times and all I get is it s from the position they had you on the table in.

Hi,

The possible causes of your problem are:
-As your physician mentioned there is possibility that because of the lithotomy position which is usually followed during the surgical abortion, some amount of low back pain can be seen.
-Postprocedural infections sometimes can lead to pelvic pain which can present as lower back pain also.

As the pain severe better to get evaluated. By clinical examination and investigations like ultrasound and X-ray pelvis, the possible cause of your problem can be identified and treatment can be taken accordingly. In case of infection you may need to take systemic antibiotics, analgesics and anti inflammatory drugs, which can decrease the pain. If the position during the procedure is responsible for the pain, you may need to take the support of physiotherapy and analgesics.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sree Gouri S. R., OBGYN
