Why Am I Having Pain Around My Knee?

my son is 27 years old and was in a serious car accident 8 years ago. he has a titanium rod in his femur and has developed some serious pain around the knee area. we are wanting to know if it is possible the screws from the rod are causing problems and if they should or can be removed.
