Why Are Lymph Nodes Removed And What Is The Procedure?
A friend of my 23 year old daughter has had a needle biopsy of cervical lymph glands and an upper head/neck CT scan done recently. She is scheduled for removal of neck lymph glands this coming week and has not had anything explained to her about what was found or why this procedure. Could you shed some light on what to expect or a way to proceed to get some answers? She is a single mom and is worried.
It is a pretty involved procedure. It would only be done with a serious condition generally cancer as part of a larger set of other treatments for cancer. What else is done and the prognosis varies from intensive chemotherapy and some radiation but maybe not any hospitalizations (Hodgkins) to radiation, chemotherapy, bone marrow transplant, long hospitalizations and at best only a 50/50 shot of surviving 3 years (some lymphomas) to pretty hopeless (lung cancer; which would be under 1 in a million women under 20, so, thats quite doubtful and lymph node removal isnt part of the treatment for it)
There are more than one reasons that can lead to removal of lymph nodes for management of the disorder.
Lymph nodes are glands where all the organs of the body drain so that organs of the bodies can work infection-free. There are several groups of lymph nodes in entire body drainig specific areas. Sometimes these lymph glands themselves become infected with resistant bacteria that antibiotics cannot cure or patient suffers from recurrent infections. In that case, lymph glands may need to be surgically removed.
In other case, cancer is the disease that spreads from one part of the body to another via lymph nodes. So if cancer is detected in some area and the draining lymph nodes of that area are also found involved with cancer, then removal of lymph nodes proves to be best decision for stopping spread of cancer in body.
Some other diseases specific to lymph nodes can also necessitate removal of the glands.
In your case, I would advise you to meet the doctor who advised you surgery and ask him why this particular surgery is recommended and what does biopsy report suggest.
I hope this information helps. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic.
