I've been to the emergency room for this... It might not be just in your head, I bet if they did an ECG your signals would be off during these episodes, like mine were. My heart would beat extremely fast and hard out of nowhere, when I was not in a stressful environment what so ever. Sometimes it would get to the point of my arms (usually the left, sometimes both) going numb and tingly, and I'd start to get chest pain. Even if I sat down, took slow breaths, and relaxed it would continue to get worse. They ended up giving me a benzo to slow my heart rate. I later learned (after three similar visits) that in some people, the electrical signal of their heart changes when they come into contact with different foods, drugs, etc. I was referred to a PE doctor and told that I have a branch block, which I'm told won't amount to much other than getting light headed when I stand up too fast and these weird heart palpitations. If it happens literally EVERY time you smoke, I'd say it's time to call it quits or dramatically reduce your intake. Slowly rebuilding your tolerance might help.
