Hello Dr. Vineet,
My Mother was feeling very weak in April 2010 and after check ups she was prescribed iron tablets for a low blood count. She did not get better and started vomiting after eating certain foods. We again went for a full check up as she had some bleeding while passing stools. The had done a full check up and endoscopy and some test for cancer as they had some doubt ( as she has a hysterectomy because they detect some cancer cells in 2008) but all test came back negative and said that because of the iron tablets she was constipating and hence the blood and was asked to continue with the tablets.
Again in June she was not getting better we had done a whole blood culture and the only thing that showed was anemia and again was prescribed some tablets.
In July 2010 she did get better only to get worse again, main complain was weakness and vomiting, we again did a blood test and her blood urea was alarmingly high, we took her to the hospital where they ran some test and was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Failure, After we told them about the hysterectomy, they wanted to rule out cancer so they did a lot of tests. In one of the tests Electrophoris Serum Test they was something very faint. So they did a bone marrow test. The test came back negative and they told us that its not cancer.
She was nearly 2 weeks in the hospital with all the tests being done and was about to get discharged with CKD as the final diagnosis she suddenly got severe pain on her right thigh, an xray was done and a 10 cm lesion, was found and she had a pathological fracture.
A surgery was done and a rod was inserted and bone samples were taken, the results came back positive for Multiple Myeloma.
by this time it was the first week of September and as soon as she could move we took her to Mumbai where we live and took her to TATA's for a second opinion, they redid all the test and also did the urine test for Bence Jones protein, I was positive for that protein and they told us that we will have to do Radiation and 4 months course of Valcade.
We again somehow werent too confident and felt our case was not studied that well and were being rushed, mostly because TATA's have too many patients. We were recommened to a Dr. Agarwal and he we felt very confident with him.
A bone marrow test was redone again, this time from the Hip region and again it came back clear.
The last Xray we took of the thigh was on the first week of Oct and it has started to heal. We will be starting with Valcade 1 mg per week for 2 months and test will be redone to see the progress.
I still want to be absolutely sure of everything and the progosis, The docs have told us there there are chances of her getting back her kidney functions once the treatment starts.
I can provide you with all the reports you need, do let me know how do i go about this, thanks.
