Why Has My 3-year-old Been Prescribed With Antibiotics For Cough?
Hello Dr. My daughter is 3 yrs old...she often gets cough ....for which her Dr.suggested advance course Augmenting DDS and ascoril ls syrup...also suggested to give montair plus 1/2 tablet for 3 months so that it doesn t occur again. My question is - I have heard that antibiotic should be avoided for kids....but Dr.always suggests antibiotics whenever she had cough...pls suggest
Hi Antibiotics are not prescribed without indications.Cough and most respiratory infections in children are caused by viruses and bacteria.Viruses mostly and will not need antibiotics for the child to recover. This does not mean that bacteria can not infect and justify antibiotic prescription.Even viral infections that linger long get superinfected by bacteria and will need antibiotics.Even without laboratory findings, antibiotic prescription in cough can be judged by clinical presentation and from physical examination.I do not feel your daughter's Doctor prescribed it for no good reason.Any Doctor will always evaluate the risk and benefits of any medication before prescribing.Just believe in him. Hope my answer will clear your doubts Best regards
