Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I m trying to understand why coumiden would be prescribed instead of one of the newer drugs such as Xeralto or Warfarin. Isn/t coumiden a blood thinner as are these others and isn t it more dangerous and a much older drug? Am I correct that it is prescribed for people with a high risk of stroke and blood clots?
Well, Coumadin is same as warfarin and this is most used anticoagulant, the cheapest one and still effective enough. Xarelto is newer,as well as pradaxa or Eliquis and much more expensive and usually reserved for patients with mechanical heart valves and after pulmonary embolism. But many people who need stroke prevention take newer anticoagulant and usually must pay full price for it.
I hope I have answered your query. I wish you a nice day.
