Why Is Lipitor Prescribed For A Person With Diabetes?
First I m diabetic, but not out of Control, 6.7 ac1, I do mt have a cholesterol problem I ve had a problem with acid reflux. Just had sonograms of abdomen and heart xray all negative. Why would a doctor prescribed lipator just because I have diabetes?
Hello Thank you for your question. I understand your concern. Let me try and explain. People with Diabetes Mellitus are considered to be at a higher risk for cardiovascular events ( such as a heart attack, or a stroke) than the normal population.
As per ACC/AHA guidelines, it is recommended that Diabetics over the age of 40 years should take statins. The NICE guidelines recommend Atorvastatin 20 mg to Diabetics with a 10 % or greater- 10 year risk of developing Cardiovascular Disease.
I hope this has answered your query. Regards Dr. Alex
