Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I've had diarrhea for over a month and for the past several months have passed fat globules in my feces. Is this an emergency..they are less as time passes but I found one today. Age 73, 217 pounds 5'11", diabetes, low thyroid. Cholesterol pretty good, am losing weight because I'm limiting what I eat. No cramps but loose to watery stools.
Hi, Fat globules in stools is due to malabsorption of fat. It is possibly due to malabsorption in your intestines secondary to defective digestion or defective absorption. Get a stool examination done for confirmation and to identify any pathological cause like infections. If stool examination indicates only fat malabsorption, you might require an endoscopy and endoscopic biopsy to identify any atrophic cause or other causes for malabsoprtion. Try to manage your diet rich in fiber. If you are using any medications, especially laxatives, you need to discuss with your doctor. Any further queries, happy to help again. Dr. Prakash HM
