Why Is My Left Side Becoming Weak Even After Taking Nortriptyline For Permanent Nerve Damage And Tramadol ?

Hello, my name is Valerie. I have been on Nortriptyline 10mg cap #60 for 17 days,(three a day) I was perscripe this medicine for pain, (I was told that I have Permanent Nerve damage in my left knee). I had fluid drawn off my left knee on Feb. 5th. three weeks prior to this I had fluid taken off my right knee, but later found out that I should have waited at least 3 months before fluids should have been taken off of my other knee. I have been having chronic pain every since Feb. 5th this year. I gone to see several different specialist to try and figure out what is going on. The pain started in my left knee and moved downwards, my left foot is numb only under the bottom, I was told by a neurogist and was told by this dr. that he could not do anything for me, so now I am been sent to a surgeon to see if that can figure out what is going on. I know I drifted off of my question, but I have gained about 30 pounds since this incident on Feb 5th. I believe that the medicines that I been taking has a lot to do with this. I still have serve pain under my left foot all day long, I also have serve swelling of the left leg from the knee down. I am also taking Tramadol 50mg tablets (two at bed time) and Ibuprofen 800mg Tablets ( three or four a day). I have been walking with crutches since Feb. 5th. Ihave no useage of my left ankle and left side is getting weaker.

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Medication like Nortriptyline, Tramadol, Ibuprofen are medications which function is merely to alleviate symptoms, soothe the pain. They do not have any effect on nerve damage, if there is a nerve compression or some other cause damaging the nerve these drugs do not do much about it. So if the nerve is suffering it is predictable that the weakness might worsen.
You are not very clear about the cause, about why you were sent to a surgeon, what procedure was suggested, so hard to express an opinion about that. If there is an active nerve compression at the root I am afraid only surgery can deal with it in order to at least stop the issue from progressing.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
