Will 40 Mg Of Accutane Per Day Will Help In Improving Skin From Acne?

My son is 18 years old and weighs 150 pounds. He just completed his first month of 40mg 1x a day of accutane. His skin looks a bit better, we thought it would get worse at first. I thought they would up his dosage, but his doctor left it at 40 mg 1x a day. Is that going to work?

Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic.

Oral retinoids (accutane) are indicated for severe acne OR for acne unresponsive to traditional anti-acne medications. It the only drug which offers any chance of long term cure and after a full course of retinoids significant number of people never have a recurrence of there acne.

The starting dose can vary from 0.3mg /kg/day to 1.5-2.0 mg/kg/day depending on the choice of the physician. Some doctor start with a lower dose and hike it up later whereas others start with a high dose from the beginning.

As it can cause dryness and skin peeling (lips and hands and feet) therefore mostly doctors prefer to start at a lower dose initially and then increase later to higher doses. 40mg per day is an adequate dose to begin with in a 150pound male, which can be hiked later on by your treating doctor, depending upon the response.

It should be taken under the supervision of a dermatologist because of certain lab tests which are to be done before and during treatment with isotretinoin.
