For sinus infection, I am half way through my second round of antibiotics (Augmentin now, before it was Amoxycillin) and was given a sample of Nasonex I took for only 2 days because it burned my nose and right ear where the pressure and pain seemed to be the most concentrated. Stopped taking this and now my pressure has returned, my face feels puffy and there s a rash on my right ear. As a result, my doctor suggests I take Afrin 12 hour until we meet for my follow-up in 4 days. At this stage in my care, will all OTC sprays irritate already irritated nasal membranes? What about the rash on my ear?
Hi. Thanks for your query. Yes the OTC sprays can cause irritation of the nasal mucosa. Read and understood that you are taking Augmentin for the sinus infection and you were also give the nasal spray of Nasonex. For that matter anything under the sun including sun can cause allergy. The rash on the ear can be due to infection of the sinuses or can be allergy to anything. This is called exenthema and anything can cause this. I would advise you to take oral antihistmine and oral steroids. Do not use any nasal spray.
