Will Long Usage Of Carbimazole Cause Under Active Thyroid?
I have been taking 10mg of carbimazole for about 18 months now and my thyroid levels are normal. I visited my endocrologinst last week and I am going away on holiday for 4 months holiday and just wondered if I keep taking my 10mg carbimazole for another 4 months will I go over into the underactive thyroid and start putting on weight. I am 70 years old and other than thyroid in good health.
If the last hormonal level resulted to be within the normal ranges with 10 mg of carbimazole it means that this is the right dose for the moment. How is it going to be for the upcoming 4 months no one can predict but if you will not have the possibility to check the hormones for this period, you should continue with the actual dose.
You should be more concerned regarding the risk for hyperthyroidism rather than hypothyroidism, anyway the dose is low and it would cause only a mild hypothyroidism.
The chances for both of them are low, as you have been from 18 months under this dose with normal hormonal levels. So continue with 10 mg and once you are back check the thyroid hormones.
Kind regards, Dr.Mirjeta
