General & Family Physician, Dr. Alma Neço's Response
Hello dear, Thank you for your question,
TURP is indicated to patients with an enlarged prostate, that prevents urine from draining through the urinary tract. This condition is called urinary stasis and it predisposes for urinary infections. This would explain why your father has had recurrent infections before the intervention.
Even though TURP is considered a minimally invasive procedure, it can have complications. So the current infection can be a slight complication or just a random infection that can happen to everyone. Pus cells or leukocytes are an indicator, but not the cause of the infection.
The next step is to send a urine specimen for culture in order to isolate the causative bacteria and the specific antibiotic to use.
If this situation persists, your dad might need a consult with an urologist in order to determine the cause of infections.
I hope this helped. Kind regards, Dr. Alma
