Will Smoking Pot Further Damage Heart After Open Heart Surgery?

I have mitral valve prolapse and had open heart surgery last year to repair severe regurgitation. I have also been smoking pot for about 9 months on a regular basis. It helps with my anxiety but I am wondering if I am damaging my heart further. I have yet to talk to my own doctor.

Hi, thank you for posting.

I have gone through your query and I understand your concerns.

Pot smoking has negative effects in heart work, because it raises heart activity by raising acetylcholine(neurotransmitter).
It can also cause hypotension, coronary arteries atherosclerosis, stroke and infarction.

You shouldn't continue smoking pot because it will damage your heart.

For anxiety you can use antidepressant medicines such as Amitriptyline.

Contact your psychiatrist.

All the best.
Dr. Behar.
