I have had a very painful sore throat for five days (since 5/21). I have no other symptoms (no fever, no rash, no nausea, no headache, no swollen tonsils that I can see). I started taking malarone on 5/17. I read that persistent sore throat can be a severe side effect of malarone and I wonder if I should stop taking it, or if some other action is better. I am in India and unable to reach my regular doctor in the U.S. until my return on 6/2.
Hi. Thanks for your query and an elucidate history. Noted your history of taking Malarone an anti-malarial. This is only taken for a few days. Yes, one of the side effects is sore throat. But it is possible that you symptoms might have been due to upper respiratory tract infections. If the course of Malarone is finished you do not have to repeat it. Consult an ENT Surgeon to have a clinical evaluation and examination and carry on the further treatment as per the findings and add on treatment if there is a chance of reaction to Malarone and refer you to the Physician for further management.
