Will Taking Thyronorm Suffice For Hashimoto Thyroiditis?

Hi i have been detected with Hashimoto thyroiditis around 15yrs back and my dose has been increased around all these years from 25 mcg to 150mcg. Right now i am on 150mcg of thyronorm but still my TSH doesnt come down and i see lot of aberration. Recently i checked and my TSH was 19.5. Why is it so inspite of taking 150mcg it is not helping.

Hi,
Welcome to HCM. I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.

Uncontrolled TSH on replacement can be due to 3 things:

1. Inadequate dose

Your body requirement may be high. Thyroxine is a replacement treatment, that means you body is not producing it so you are replacing it. If your body requirement is 200 mcg and you are taking only 150, your TSH will never be normalized.

2. Improper intake

This is the most common cause. Follow this check list
a. Purchase tablet only in full bottle/ strips - not as loose tablets
b. Keep the tablets in sun protected area
c. Take the medication in morning empty stomach. Take tea/ coffee/
food only after 1 hour
d. Never miss a tablet. If you miss take twice the dose next day.

3. Decreased drug absorption

This could be due to gastritis, mal absorption or taking some medicices like calcium or milk/ food along with thyronorm.

Please make sure every thing above is perfect in your case. If still TSH is not getting controlled, you need detailed evaluation like endoscopy, T4 challenge test, etc for which you have to consult an endocrinologist.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help
