Will The Dermoid Cyst Affect My Fertility?

Hi! I am 29 years unmarried female. I have been diagnosed with a dermoid cyst in the right ovary measuring 6 cms. An ultrasoud confirmed this. I have pain and swelling in abdomen. My menstruation is otherwise normal. Is this going to affect my fertility?

Hello and I hope I can help you today.

A Dermoid cyst is a benign tumor of the ovary. It does not make hormones or affect your menstrual cycle at all. However, if it gets large, it can flip around inside you and even twist around and lose its blood supply (called torsion) which can cause death of the ovary and severe pain needing emergency surgery.

So to prevent this generally most GYN doctors would recommend you have the cyst removed if it is bigger than 5 cm to reduce the risk of losing the ovary from torsion. I suggest you consult with your GYN doctor about removing the cyst at some point so you will reduce the risk of losing your ovary.

I hope this information and advice was helpful, Dr. Brown
