Will The Use Of Clobetasol Topical 0.5% On Scalp Reduce Flaking On Scalp Or Cause Hairfall?
Can my mother-in-law use Clobetasol topical 0.5% on her scalp to reduce flaking on her scalp? Will it make her hair fall out? She also has some for her scalp but she said it doesn't work. She has put the ointment on her hairline making the skin on her scalp softer, but it's not approaching the center of her scalp. Her hair has gotten thinner in the last few weeks. She puts it on a few times a week so she's not sure if the thinning is related to using the ointment or wearing a baseball cap when she goes outside and in the house for a few hours.
I can understand your concern for flaking on scalp of your mother in law.
Clobetasol topical 0.5% in lotion form can be used to reduce flaking on her scalp. If used for shorter period of time (less than 7-14 days) then do not cause any side effect and is very safe drug to be used.
But if used for longer time then it can lead to steroidal side effects. You should meet your treating dermatologist and take decision accordingly.
In my view simple proper washing is sufficient to take care of the flaking problem in scalp. I suggest her to wash scalp daily by proper rinsing and using a shampoo containing ketoconazole 2 % lotion in it.
Take care.
