Will Using Suppositories Post Expiry Date Cause Recurring Fever?

My 22 month old son has fever 102 and Motrin only brought down for an hour then fever went back up. I gave a lukewarm bath and tried an acetaminophen suppository. I went to a check temperature and elevated again a couple of hours later. When I went back to read when I could give fever reducer again I noticed suppositories are expired.

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Giving suppositories after expiry date containing acetaminophen would not cause recurrence of fever. Any drug after its expiry should not be administered as the strength would have been reduced and its efficacy would have comedown. Also, sometimes, the drug might have transformed to more toxic product, which could cause unusual adverse effects.
In your case, it clearly states that the expired drug administration has shown to be less effective. However, since the fever appears to be of high grade, it requires evaluation and proper treatment and just symptomatic treatment of giving acetaminophen would not suffice.
Kindly consult Pediatrician at the earliest for appropriate evaluation and management.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
