Would You Suggest Doubling The Protonix To Decrease The GERD Symptoms While On The Doxycycline ?

I have been taking Protonix for 1 month since diagnosed with GERD. I saw my doctor and hep rescribed Doxycycline 100mg twice a day for a double ear infection and sinusitis ( head pressure for a week ) my doctor also told me to take Ibuprofen for the pain. Should I not use the ibuprofen and use Tylenol instead. He said ibuprofen would help the swelling but I am worried about the reflux symptoms. I have a sour taste in my mouth still and feel like I have phlegm with post nasal drip. I have an ENT appointment in 4 days but am so tired of being sick. I am 26 and weigh 260lbs. Would you suggest doubling the Protonix to decrease the GERD symptoms while on the Doxycycline ? He also called in Levaquin just in case I want to stop the doxycycline. ( FYI. I am very anxious about drugs and their side effects. I usually don t take anything more than Tylenol ).

Hi ! Good morning. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

If I were your doctor, I would not increase the dosage of Protonix for you. Instead I would advise you for the following considering your GERD symptoms :

1) Elevate the head end of the bed with two blocks on each side, so that the regurgitation does not occur while lying down, and the contents of esophagus and stomach flow down with gravity.
2) Some modification in your diet like more of roughage, enough liquids, avoidance of oily, fried, and fast food
3) Regular routine exercises like morning walk depending on your medical fitness.
4) Prescription for a prokinetic agent in addition for symptomatic relief and to have a control on the acid production and facilitate movement of gastric contents downwards.
5) A routine blood sugar test both fasting and post prandial.
6) You could use Tylenol instead although its anti inflammatory actions are less pronounced than that of Ibuprofen.
7) Go for regular steam inhalation two to three times a day to augment reducing the swelling in nasal mucosa for sinusitis.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.

Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. Wishing you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
