Hello,
Welcome to Healthcaremagic.
Osteophyte formation in your thoracic spines are due to fillowing reasons
1. Ageing leading to IV disc degeneration
2. Arthritis
3. Inflammation of ligaments and intervertebral discs and other tissues.
4. Poor posture and ergonomics may stress some particular area in joint. This can lead to osteophyte formation.
These in turn stimulate the bone growth leading to osteophyte formation.
Pain in back and shoulder is not due to Osteophyte itself.
It is due to compression of nerves by growing osteophytes.

Surgery is advised only when nerve compression is major and vital.
Surgery is generally not advised because it is a massive surgery.
Surgeon have to access the anterior osteophyte it is very difficult in spine.

You can take NSAIDS and muscle relaxants.
If still painful, epidural cortisone injection may be helpful.

Hope this helps.
Take care
