Elder abuse indicates the types of harm to old aged individuals. It is also known as elder mistreatment, senior abuse. Elder abuse is the infliction of physical, emotional or psychological harm on an older adult.

 

It is defined asphysical, mental, or financial abuse of elderly persons, usually by their children, elderly care institutions, or people who prey specifically on the elderly”.

Types of elder abuse

Physical abuse like hitting, punching, slapping, burning, pushing, kicking, restraining, false imprisonment, giving wrong medications, giving excess of medication.

Psychological/Emotional like shouting, frightening, blaming, constantly criticizing, ignoring or humiliating

Financial like illegal or unauthorized use of person’s property, money, pension or other valuables.

Sexual: Forcing an old age individual for any sexual activity without their consent.

Elder abuse

Signs and symptoms of elder abuse

In physical abuse a person may have

  • Broken bones, sprains, dislocations, broken spectacles
  • Bruises, cuts, abrasions
  • Black eyes, rope marks
  • Open wounds, cuts, puncture wounds
  • Internal injuries
  • Sudden changes in behavior

In emotional abuse

  • Emotionally upset
  • Agitated
  • Emotionally withdrawn
  • Not talkative
  • Not responding

As a result of neglect:

  • Having signs of dehydration, malnutrition, or other health problems which are not treated.
  • Bed sores
  • Poor personal hygiene
  • Loss of weight
  • Inappropriate wearing of clothes
