It is also known as dermatitis. It causes vagina to to become sore, dry, red and thicker in some places. It is some times a chronic condition.


Vaginal rash is an eruption on the skin of vagina.

Causes of vaginal rashes with itching:

Prevention and treatment:

  • Avoid colored or perfumed toilet tissue and bubble bath.
  • Avoid feminine hygiene sprays and douches.
  • Change out of wet clothing, especially wet bathing suits as soon as possible.
  • Cleanse the area by wiping or washing after urinating or having a bowel movement.
  • Keep your genital area clean and dry. Use plain and unscented soap.
  • Keep your blood sugar under control if you have diabetes.
  • Lose weight if you are overweight.
  • Wear cotton panties. Avoid panties made of synthetic materials.

Other precautions:

  • Avoid overexertion, heat, excessive sweating.
  • Avoid scratching.
  • Delay sexual activity until the symptoms get better or use a lubricant during intercourse.
  • Use condoms to avoid spreading of infection.

When to seek medical advice:

  • If you have blisters or ulcers over vagina and vulva.
  • If you have burning urination or other urinary symptoms like urgency.
  • Unusual vaginal bleeding, swelling or discharge.
  • If your partner also has symptoms.
  • If the symptoms worsen, lasts longer than one week or recur.

Diagnostic tests:

  • Pelvic examination, medical history.
  • Culture and microscopic examination of vaginal discharge.
  • Pap smear.
  • Urine and blood tests.

Treatment:

  • Antibiotics for bacterial infections including sexually transmitted infections.
  • Antifungals for yeast infections.
  • Anti histamines for relief of itching.
  • Steroid creams or lotions to reduce inflammation.
