Question: Hi ... Diagnosed for minor PCOS; symptoms - overweight, pain in lower abdomen and acne. Already have two kids both by c-section. Doctor recommended Nacfil sachets and bigomet SR for a month. Are these medication required for such long duration?
Brief Answer:
Metformin (bigomet ) atleast for 3 months.
Detailed Answer:
Hi there,
Welcome to HCM,
The first treatment we recommend any patient diagnosed with PCOS is healthy diet and exercise as a weight loss of 5-6 kilos and a decrease in Body Mass Index(BMI)(height to weight ratio) can drastically reduce acne, and other symptoms.
Also, Nacfil is a multi vitamin not really necessary to take unless you have been diagnosed with a vitamin B12 deficiency.
Bigomet is advisable it will get your PCOS in control and help regularize period in the long run. But you need to take it for atleast 3 months to show if it has any effect.
Hope this helps.
Regards.

Thanks doc for your prompt reply.
My period cycle is quite normal. However overweight is major concern as 80kg with height 5ft, 4 inches. I have tried various exercises and diets for that but no luck for two years (since my last conception in 2013). Actually, my doctor has recommended bigomet SR for three months.
I was worried because bigomet was recommended to me during my second pregnancy for gestational diabetes and I am cautious about getting diagnosed for diabetes in future though I do not have family history.

Brief Answer:
Metformin is antidiabetic drug, very useful in PCOS
Detailed Answer:
Hi Welcome back to HCM.
Weight loss is difficult, but if achieved is very effective.
You need a very targeted approach, weighing yourself weekly on Sundays.
Giving yourself weekly, monthly goals, like half kilos per week, 2-3 kilos per month.
Also starting the metformin will control the glucose metabolism in your body and help you with weight reduction.
You can continue it for longer than 3 months if you find it helping you.
Since you have PCOS, and a history of gestational diabetes, you do have a 50% chance of developing type 2 diabetes in the future.
Diet, exercise and healthy lifestyle and the metformin can delay the onset of diabetes for you.
All the more recommendation that you take metformin.
Get blood sugars checked yearly as a precaution.
Hope this helps.
Regards.
