Are Menstrual Cycles Irregular After Taking An Emergency Contraceptive Pill?
Question: Hello,
I had sex with my girlfriend on the 16th of March. The next day she took a NextChoice morning after pill and had her period 7 days later (2 weeks early). It is now April 23rd and she has not had her next period (it has been 28-29 days). Should i be worried? Please help. She does not seemed worried.

Hello and thanks for your query.
Let me provide you reassurance that after taking the morning after pill it is not uncommon that a woman's menstrual cycle will exhibit a bit of irregularity. This irregularity is caused mainly by the hormonal effects of the medication.
The usual course is that within two to three months after taking the pill, the menstrual cycle will return back to a typical 28 day cycle.
If you still have some anxiety, you could purchase an over the counter pregnancy test and have her run the test to give you even more reassurance.
I hope this reply has been helpful to you. I am available for your followups if needed.

Hello,
Thank you for your help. The only other reason for my concern is that we have had sex since then with condoms ( i am positive that none of them broke and checked). After there was one time when i went inside her without a condom and immediately pulled out when we realized it was incredibly stupid to do. I don't think there was any pre-cum, but the "what-ifs" just have me worried.
This does not really change the situation or the needed answer. I am only replying incase something above changes the circumstances (most likely against my favor)
Lastly, is there a day we should expect the next period? As in, should we count the 28-35 days from the last one which was 2 weeks early or from when she would normally get it which was earlier. Thank you

Hi and thanks for your followup.
I would expect her to have her period start within the next 3 days. If for some reason this does not happen, I would recommend you purchase an over the counter pregnancy test to confirm she is in fact not pregnant.
I realize this is a stressful situation for you and more often than not her cycle will return back to normal. If the pregnancy test is negative and you wait a few more days - say until April 30th and still no period, I would have her see her physician for an examination.
I hope this has provided you with some reassurance and comfort. Thank you again for your query and I wish you both continued excellent health.
