Posted on Thu, 24 Dec 2015
Question: I am in my mid seventies with chronic arthritis, have had 3 back operations a hysterectomy and a knee replaced, I ache in every joint so I do not sleep well and have great problems in walking. My medication at present is dihydrocodeine. tramadol, paracetamol, diazapam, losarton and amytriptiline ,osomeprazole. After a visit to a pain clinic the doctor there suggested I change to either duloxetine or pregabalin. My own GP has given me the choice of changing to one of them obviously I will need to change the medicines I already take but I do not suffer any bad side effects with them,,e . l live in Scotland with a cold damp climate and FREE PRESCRIPTIONS.
Which of the two would you suggest?

Brief Answer:
uh... they are not a pain medication

Detailed Answer:
they are nerve dampers without much direct pain action. Frankly amitryptiline is stronger than duloxetine for pain but weaker for depression. Pregabalin, an anti-epileptic is good if nerves are painful and will not have much interaction nor necessarily overlap with the other medications new or old.
not quite sure of the particular question though.
ASPIRIN like drugs are the first choice for arthritis/inflammatory pain in any case.

Pregabalin.

Are you suggesting that amytriptiline would be a better drug for my nerve pain. I take 25mg at night ? I cannot. Cope much longer with this nerve pain, I still have severe pain in my big toe have to keep bed clothes off it at night.
I do not suffer any side effects with any of the meds I already take see last email and am wary of adding anything that may do this!

Hope you can give me some info please

The question I was asking which medication would be the best to help with the really bad and constant and debilitating. Pain!
I realise that they maybe prescribed for things other than pain however the PAIN doctor was the one who suggested them.

I do not have any problems with what I presently take and do not want any side effects to upset me!!!!ยก!!!!!

However you seem to be suggest ing 5hat amytriptiline I take 1 a day 25 mg might be a bettr
I am still waiting for a response to my last question regarding my pain problems.

Your last doctor was marvellous and so helpful and prompt with his reply to the questions regarding MND for my daughter.

I seem to be having a problem with your acceptance of my e.mail address and or my password. Can you help me please . I am not very adept with computers so please help

Brief Answer:
Sorry, but the follow up

Detailed Answer:
has only arrived THIS minute (3 min ago) and I did not see the previous questions.
Amitryptiline is a very good medication and unlike the others has some direct action on pain.
Pregabalin is also active on nerve pain but I have to say that amitryptiline has more effects on pain than pregabalin. They are quite different and people vary a lot on which works for them.

Then there is the question of what might be going on. Infection, gout, fracture all need specific treatment and what is causing the pain is a key point to be addressed.

Sorry, I answer the moment I get a notification. But they only notified me within the last 10 minutes counting the time of my writing into the 10 minutes.
