Can Losartan Cause Constipation?

default
Posted on Tue, 16 Dec 2014
Question: Can Losartan at 100 mg tablet cause constipation? I have small stools with some straining and feel like I can never finish out and then have constant rectal pressure throughout the day but no diaahera. I do have a lot of gas, bloating and cramping. There is no blood in stool. I have a food log and have found no solutions there. I have no allergies. I do suffer depression and anxiety at times. If it's not the Losartan, then what is wrong with me? The constant rectal pressure drives me crazy.

Brief Answer:
called tenesmus

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Tenesmus is the medical term used to describe the constant feeling as though a person needs to pass stool.

Constipation and tenesmus are not known side effects of losartan though persons may react to medications differently.

The most common causes of tenesmus are:(1)inflammatory bowel disease such as crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis

(2)anorectal abscess

(3)irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

(4)hemorrhoids

(5)polyps (outgrowths) in the colon

(6)infective colitis- infection within the colon

(7)psychological or related to stress

To determine the cause you may need to consider visiting your doctor for an evaluation.

This evaluation may include physical examination of abdomen. Protoscopy (examination of the anus by a small scope)- this is mainly used to identify hemorrhoids.
In addition, other tests may be needed such as FBC, ESR and also imaging (colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy).

It is quite possible and likely that the pressure is not related to any serious causes but you may want to visit your doctor if it continues.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
