Child Having Fever And Not Eating Food. On Pecef 50 And Vizylac. Is It Safe To Give Vizilac Or Electrol?
Will vizilac or electrol (ORS) help more?
Thanks
Vizylac (Lactic Acid Bacillus powder) is a "probiotic". A 'pro' (for) 'biotic' (life) is a medicine that contains live microorganisms that are helpful to the body. Vizylac contains Lactobacilli, a type of bacteria that can help restore normalcy in the gut, help increase local immunity, help eliminate disease-causing organisms, and, if used correctly, also help make vitamins and nutrients for us.
Remember, bacteria are not always bad for the body. In fact, in a normal individual, healthy bacteria, such as Lactobacillus, are found in the interstines, which help in digestion and absorption of food. When strong antibiotics are given, in addition to removing the bad, pathogenic (infection-causing) bacteria, the antibiotic also kills and removes these good bacteria. This can cause imbalance in the intestinal environment and can produce gastric symptoms like diarrhoea, poor appetite, etc. So, probiotics like Vizylac help restore this balance and hence are often prescribed along with strong antibiotics.
So, Vizylac is a safe medicine and can help in restoring your grand-daughter's digestive symptoms such as her loss of appetite.
(Electral or ORS powder is given for diarrhoea in order to prevent dehydration (water loss) and to replenish certain essential salts and glucose which also get lost when a person has diarrhoea. This medicine will not help, when a person does not have diarrhoea and does not improve appetite).
I hope I have clarified your doubts.
Best wishes,
