Child Having High Fever. Given Meftal, Imol Syrup And Solvin Cold. What Are The Side Effects?
Question: Dear Doc
my son is 1.4 years old and 10.6 kgs, he is running high temperature on and off since 4 days temp is 103.4, 102.103 . not coming down below 102 at all. but temp is occuring on and off. our doc has given Meftal P 5 ml for days, since the temp did not come down, he changed the to IMOL Syrup 7ml.
he is little better now but again temp is 102 after somtime. (occured once) also along with this he has given SOLVIN COLD 6ML, jifon (antibiotic)6 ml twice a day. i m really worried the amount of medicines we have given to the little baby, what are the side effects. also it will be great if you could tell us how to control fever with low medicines no side effects. i m tensed that is why i want to ask a specialist. hope you will guide us with right way

I can understand your concern.
It seems your child is having fever with cold mostly because of an upper bacterial infection.
Continue the medication as advised, but Solvin Cold 2.5ml per dose is enough and Imol 6ml is enough as per his age and weight.
Whenever there is temperature more than 100 degree F, then only give Imol syrup and there should be a minimum of 6 hours gap between two doses of Imol.
The side effects are minimal if given in prescribed dose.
If there is a high grade fever, you can do tepid sponging with lukewarm water after giving Imol.
Jifon is an antibiotic and contains cefixime which is having a good safety profile in children.
Try to maintain the hydration and nutrition of the child by giving plenty of oral fluids and soft diet.
If fever is persisting I advise you to consult the pediatrician again for reexamination and evaluation with investigations if necessary depending on his examination.

I forgot to mention two points here.
1. my doc told us that he will do the blood test after 5-6 days if the temp does not come down. my query here is "is it necessary to do blood test, or is there any change of medicine which will help .
2. does meftal has any severe side effects as we have given meftal for 1.5 days.
but the temp did not come down using meftal (had mentioned earlier too)
3. he also gave an injection h mol 2cc (i m not very sure about the medical name here as i overheard the nurse speaking and i was really tensed, that time the temp was 103.4, but this injection also did not help. but please tell us the side effects if any so that in future this information will be very very helpful to us.
4. what are the medicines we should avoid in a long run. (i am not asking the full list but basic medicines like Ibejeric, imol, meftal P etc..

1. If the temperature doesn't come to normal, it is advised to go for blood and
urine tests as advised by the doctor. The tests will help in the diagnosis of
infection and in planning treatment. Medications can be changed depending on
the results of tests if required.
2. Meftal if it is given in prescribed dose usually doesn't have any significant side
effects.
The common side effects of Meftal are skin rash and diarrhea.
This drug to be given with food as it will cause gastric irritation if it is given on empty stomach.
Meftal can be given for shorter periods.
It should not be given for more than 7 days. So nothing to worry as you have used it for 1.5 day only.
3. I think the injection given was paracetamol and it has a good safety profile if it
is given in prescribed dose as advised by your pediatrician. The dose is usually
around 0.2 to 0.3 cc.
The main side effect of paracetamol is on the liver, but it is not seen with the regular prescribed dose.
4. For routine fever you can use paracetamol syrups like Imol but use in
prescribed dose and interval.
If there is a high grade fever (more than 102 degree F) you can give syrups like Meftal-P or Ibuprofen in prescribed dose for shorter periods and usually with food.
Use medication with the "pediatrician" prescription only as the dose in children depends on child weight and age.
Don't give any antibiotic without prescription.
Avoid drugs like aspirin in children with fever.
