Question: Hello, my son(14) complains of neck pain after playing basketball; it's not very sharp but bothering him. It has happened to him 3rd time during the last two months. After getting advil once or twice it usually gets better and comes back in this light form after playing some hands-involving sport. He does lots of hockey but it never affects his neck. What would you recommend?

Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The mild pain in the neck that your son is having is likely to be due to a muscle spasm. Such pains often happen due to overuse of the muscles or a wrong body posture. The mild pain killers, hot fomentation, and application of a local analgesic gel usually provides the desired relief.
For a long term relief, he needs to do some neck strengthening exercises under the guidance of a physical therapist.
He can also avoid using a pillow and any abnormal neck positions.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
