Do Anabolic Steroids Have A Suppressing Effect On HPG Axis?
Question: Dear Doctor , i took some low dose anabolic steroids for 3 months in my teens. I was wondering , in case it had a suppressing effect on my HPG axis how many days before these suppressing effects wear off?
Brief Answer:
Based on the type and dose of steroids. Usually few weeks to 3 months
Detailed Answer:
Good day.
Noted your question.
Based on the potency and duration of the anabolic stetoid ( there are several types of anabolic steroids) it can take few weeks to few months for the effects to wean off.
when you take an androgenic steroid, ,pituitary and hypothalamus stop secreting commanding hormones. once these commanding hormones are not secreted, your testes will stop producing estrogen for several weeks to months based on the dose and strength. If it is a long acting depot perperation, it takes longer.

Thanks Dr. XXXXXXX
Ok. Lets look at opposite way. Suppose it was taken by boy aged 14 still in early stages of puberty with a still unestablished HPG axis system. Suppose the steroids had a 'positive feedback' effect ....will it have positive effect for months AFTER stoping the treatment?
Thanks and Best Regards

Brief Answer:
It is a different situation
Detailed Answer:
Well, that is a totally different situation ( unlike steroid use or abuse later in life). Small dose of androgenic steroid used when puberty is delayed or even in constituitional delay, will have a positive enhancing effect of hypothalamic neurons and subsequently puberty spontanously occur. Its like a little push to your car to start the engine on a very cold morning. Once the neurons are activated, body maintains HPG axis on its own. Small dose of steroids are only used for 2-3 months and it has no long term bad effects.

Dear Dr XXXXXXX thanks again.
Before i close, just one more thing.
Anabolic steroids for example test has a a negative feedback effect in hypo-pitutary. When the steroids is stopped, does hypo-pitutary reactivate from first day AFTER treatment has stopped?
The reason i ask is because test has a half life of few hours so hypo - pitutary should reactivate the following daya fter stopping treatment. I just would like your clarification and opinion. Many thanks

Brief Answer:
NOT JUST BASED ON HALF LIFE OF STEROIDS
Detailed Answer:
Good day.
The receptors are down regulated in pituitary and hypothalamus after the long term use of steroids. this takes several weeks to months to come back to normal state after stopping the steroids . But a short use of steroids doesn't make any difference and the hypothalamus and pituitary will be reactivated soon after stopping these steroids.
