Does PCOS Cause Excessive Facial Hair Growth?

Posted on Tue, 12 Jan 2016
Question: I was referred to endroinceology for excess facial hair. Blood tests were carried out which ruled out cushing syndrome and mild adrenal cognitial hypoplasia. However the consultant has queried subclinical polycystic ovary syndrome and I have to have a scan on ovarys. Does the fact that subclinical is mentioned change the severity of it.

Brief Answer:
It depends on testosterone levels and your symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,
Welcome to HCM,
PCOS to be diagnosed requires 2 out of 3 components to be met.
The first is hyperandrogenism, that is, excess facial hair, acne or by testing tester one levels in blood.
The second is abnormal periods, that is, irregular, prolonged or missed periods.
The third is ultrasound showing 10-12 peripheral arranged follicles on the ovaries and increased ovarian volume.
If only one is present it is regarded as subclinical.
2 out 3 need to be present to be diagnosed as PCOS.
So if you have PCOS treatment specific to that will also help with the excess hair.
Hope this helps.
Regards.
