default
Posted on Mon, 30 Jun 2014
Question: Good afternoon. Male, 54, cholecystectomy 25 yrs ago, high cholesterol, gastritis and duodenitis dx during colonoscopy, upper right quad pain for yrs, bouts of diarrhea...sometimes explosive, loose stools most the time. Some relief with antiacids, but abdominal pain never goes away.

Could cholecystectomy cause high cholesterol readings...especially triglycerides?

Could cholecystectomy cause gastritis, duodenitis, and pain in upper right quad?

Could cholecystectomy cause explosive diarrhea, loose stools?

Could cholecystectomy cause vitamin D deficiency?

Brief Answer:
Gastrointestinal Symptoms Yes

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for writing in

Yes cholecystectomy can cause GI symptoms, Gastritis and duodenitis can occur after the procedure but the pain in Upper right quadrant is relieved after surgery

Loose fatty stools are known after the procedure but can be avoided by keeping away from fried and fatty meals and taking digestive enymes

Vit D deficiency directly due to the procedure no but can be due to malabsorption following diarrhoea and inadequate intake

Raised triglyceride can not be attributed to the same

Hope this helps
