Does Coffee Cause A Sudden Increase In The Blood Sugar?

default
Posted on Fri, 22 Jan 2016
Question: Is there a connection between elevated blood sugar numbers and the caffeine in coffee? My overall blood
sugars have increased in the last week, without any change in diet. I take 30 units of Lantus before bed each
night. I also take Glyburide-Metformin 5/500 Mg, 2 tablets twice a day. Till I call my doctor later today, can you
suggest some advice?

Brief Answer:
Caffeine under 400 mg per day is acceptable

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Caffeine up to 400 mg per day does not increase blood sugar, significantly even in type 2 diabetes. You can state your blood sugar control numbers, both fasting and post prandial. HBA1C would be a reliable tool for assessment of blood sugar control. Continue the lantus insulin and Glyburide-Metformin. If there is significant increase in both the hba1c and blood sugar levels then the dose of one or both may be increased. If caffeine is being consumed in quantity greater than 400 mg then it should be lowered to the acceptable level.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
