Here is a tough one I've been looking at for years
I have been on Dilantin for 40 years and though not confirmed by a dr I have neuropathy, thinning bones and balance loss. Whether it is causing it for sure is unknown. Going to change to keppra generic. No seizures since 1976. They started when I was 17 in 1969. Only had 4 total and they were 1 year or more apart all while not on meds. Hard headed at that age. Always on meds since 1976. They were Grand mal. Just looking for another opinion. I'm 65 years old

Hello again
Dilantin (Phenytoin) is commonly not associated with the adverse effect of developing neuropathy. Osteomalacia can occur and is a rare association with phenytoin.
If an epileptic patient is seizure free for a year with a normal EEG then some doctors may want to carefully wean off the patient from anti epileptics. However, if there has been a recurrence or grand mal epilepsy episode which was life threatening and the risk of not being on antiepileptic meds is unacceptable then they should be continued for lifelong.
Levetiracetam or Keppra is a safer alternative and can be continued instead of Dilantin.
Wishing you best of health
