Question: I am diabetic taking Janumet 50-1,000mg 1 tablet twice daily, Acarbose 100mg 1 tablet 3 times daily, Lisinopril-HCTZ 20-25mg 1 tablet a day, Pioglitazone-HCL 45mg 1 tablet a day, Glimepiride 4mg 1 tablet 2 times a day. I'm taking these supplements: Cranberry 4200mg with vitamin C 1 gel cap a day and a mix of Herbal supplements in one capsule called HL2 in which Licorice Extract 50mg is included, this is taken 1 a day. Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking!
Taking licorice along with medications that are broken down by the liver might increase or decrease the effects of these medications.
Water pills (Diuretic drugs) interacts with LICORICE
Large amounts of licorice can decrease potassium levels in the body. Taking licorice along with "water pills" ( hydrochlorthiazide) might decrease potassium in the body too much.
So, i would not suggest taking Licorice extract in this case, as many of the medications that you take are metabolized in liver and there is a risk for lasting the effect.
Hope the information will help.
