Does Smoking Marijuana Affect Sperm Count?
Question: hi, I have to give my sperm tomorrow for an IUI with my wife in about 18 hours from now. I just smoked a joint and felt i made a mistake. can you tell me if
smoking has nothing to with your sperm donation
dont worry but if possible try to avoid it till you XXXXXXX sperm
rest it has no direct relation to your sperm donation.

Brief Answer:
smoking weed can reduce fertility but change in morphology is also reported
Detailed Answer:
Hi Dear ,
Firstly thanks for choosing health care magic to ask your query
Have noted all your details
As far as i can understand you smoked a joint ( prepared with both cannabis and tobacco).
Many researches showed that smoking pot could be linked to sperm changes.
Lets take up a case study which involved nearly 2,000 U.K. men who had given sperm to one of 14 fertility clinics.
Men aged 30 and more who reported using marijuana at least once in the past three months had nearly twice the odds of poor sperm morphology, which refers to the size and shape of sperm.
There is work from mice suggesting that cannabis can change the way that DNA is packaged, and this could indirectly lead to changes in sperm size and shape.
A 2003 study from the University of XXXXXXX found smoking marijuana can make sperm less fertile.
A 2010 study published in the journal Human Reproduction found POT damage sperm, making them less likely to fertilize eggs and less likely to have the embryos survive. This is because sperm begins to lose its ability to fight off free radicals in the seminal fluid once it's been exposed to pot smoke. Not only do the sperm cells become more sensitive to oxidative stress, but there is an increase in the amount of free radicals present in the seminal fluid.
Idealy if you want to be 100% on the safer side ,last cannabis should be smoked at least 3 months before donating sperm,However in practical scenario if you have smoked just one joint today then it should not cause any significant effect on quality of your sperm( you have not mentioned any smoking history for last 3 months,so i would consider it as first smoking in last 3 months).
But still to be on safer side as a life is associated with this decision ,i would suggest you to discuss this with your wife and treating doctor ,and if possible differ it by 3 months.9 Ideal case scenario).
Most of the researches show that joint effect the fertility ,that is it decreases chances to concieve ,but Golden rule of medical science is that there is no rule,so as it will be your baby, its better to discuss things with your fertility specialist(treating doctor should know all details),and make situation ideal .
If you want more details or have any further query feel free to ask,
Thank you

I only smoke normal tobbaco cigarettes may be 2 a day on most of the days. last I smoked joint before today was in April.
Brief Answer:
one joint can not cause any harm .
Detailed Answer:
Practically you can donate sperms don't worry just a single joint can not change the morphology of sperms .I don't think that smoking one joint after april can change the morphology of sperm.Don't worry everything will be fine, normal tobacco ciggs have nothing to do with sperm mutations.
good luck.
In case you have any other query i would be pleased to help you!
Thanks
