Question: My 22 year old daughter had an impact injury to her tibia 6 inches below the knee over a year ago. It was x-rayed and no fracture was found. She has spreading discoloration and pain around the site of the injury. What could this be and what specialist should she see?

Brief Answer: Please consult orthopedic surgeon Detailed Answer: Hi, Thanks for writing in to us. I have read through your query in detail. There is suspicion of soft tissue injury to the area of impact below the knee along the tibia. There are conditions like soft tissue injury and decreased blood supply to the region which may have resulted from the injury. Many times there is pooling of blood below the skin and that causes discoloration. Pain can be due to any injury to the muscle. In your daughter's case it looks most likely to be due to soft tissues getting injured with little bit of blood pooling. Consulting an orthopedic surgeon would be important and he may ask for recent X rays and MRI scan. It will help to know any long term changes in the region including the bone and tendons. Hope your query is answered. Do write back in case of doubts. Regards, Dr.Vivek
