Brief Answer:
Surgery is the final cure, but some other things too can help with the pain.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for using Healthcaremagic to post your health query.
I read carefully your question and I understand your concern.

There is no cure for bone spurs other then surgeries excpecially if they cause lots of problems, but different treatments can help reduce pain and stiffness. Treatment usually involves one or more of the following:
- Physical therapy – A physical therapist (exercise expert) will teach you exercises and stretches that can help stretch your joints and ease stiffness. He or she can also show you ways to do your daily activities so they don't cause as much pain. But that will depend on the joint where the spurs are localized, because of the joint doesn't have stiffness or is not a very XXXXXXX joint, then physical therapy won't be much helpful.
- Heat – especially in the morning, can help reduce pain and stiffness. Do not use heat for longer than 20 minutes at a time. Also, do not use anything too hot that could burn your skin.
- Pain-relieving medicines – You can take a pain-relieving medicine, such as acetaminophen (sample brand name: Tylenol), ibuprofen (sample brand names: Advil, Motrin), or naproxen (sample brand name: Aleve).
- Shots of steroid medicines into the affected joint – These are not the same as the steroids some athletes take illegally. These steroids help reduce pain.
- Special shoe inserts (called orthotics) – These can help with walking if you are painful when you walk.

Hope this is helpful.

Can't something like Botox be used to deaden the nerve be used? The pain is arising from the growing spur on the little toe digging constantly into a nearby nerve.

Brief Answer:
No, Botox is not an option of treatment for this problem.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for the follow up question.

The problem is not in the nerve, so Botox would not be helpful and for that reason it is not one of the options or treatment as far as I know.

The problem is the extra bone which is inflamed, makes the joints and tissues around inflamed.
So to reduce the pain it needs to either keep the inflammation down by avoiding the triggers or treat the inflammation itself. To treat the problem the only cure is to remove these extra bones by surgery.

Hope this makes sense.
Let me know if you have other questions or concerns.

Dr. Papaqako
