How Long Does An Ear Infection Take To Get Cured?

default
Posted on Wed, 5 Nov 2014
Question: I have had a middle ear infection in my left ear for over 3 weeks. I first tried sudafed and Ibuprofen. The condition improved very gradually. I then was given a course of Aurmentin 875 mg for ten days. I am now at the end of the ten days. My hearing has improved 75% and the vertigo symptoms are very mild and infrequent. Should I ask for more Augmentin or is it normal for the ear to take a while after the infection has cleared to come back to normal.

Brief Answer:
continue for 4 more days

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern.

Ten days of the antibiotics is enough but you may continue for 4 more days to make it two weeks and then assess for complete resolution on a physical exam subsequently.

Three things indicate incomplete resolution of the infection, Earache, Fever and persistent fluid drainage.

If antibiotics, decongestants don't resolve the infection, MYRINGOTOMY can be attempted which is incising the ear drum to evacuate pus. That however will require a physical examination first to see if the indication is present.

Continue Ear toilet including dry mopping with sterile cotton and a wick moistened with antibiotic then inserted, subsequently apply dry local heat.
