Question: Hi,
My Kid is of 10 months and 10 days Old boy. At the time of Birth my wife was not able to breast feed and doctors suggested nanpro formula feed. at around 6 months of age we have started solid diets and fruits and fruit juices(Prepared in Home). during 9th month of age he got very high fever. It was like Only Fever will come, (there is no cough, cold nothing) and it will get subside after some time and again it will come. When we went to Doctors they have diagnoised urine test confirmed it was because of mild urinery infection. after 7 days of treatment there is no fever and Everything fine. All of sudden for the past two days there was again similar fever without any other symptoms like cough and cold. yesterday night fever has gone down and Today morning again fever came up and all of sudden after sleep he started like "fits" for around 5-9 minutes. we had never observed such kind of thing till now. I came to know from others that high fever may also cause such symptoms in infants , Please help me out.?
is it related to fever seizure or something else ?

Hi

Thanks for writing to us.

I understand your concern.

As mentioned by you child has fever and fits.

This condition is febrile convulsion.
It could be simple febrile seizure or complex febrile seizure.
In simple febrile seizure.
-age of onset is 6 months to 5 years.
-fever at onset.
-symptom last for less than 15 minutes
-it is generalized in nature.
-child is neurologically healthy.

In complex febrile seizure.
-duration is more than 15 minutes and it could be focal and there could be multiple attacks.

From your description it seems to be simple febrile seizure

No specific tests are indicated in simple febrile seizures.

Give acetaminophen as per dosage 15mg/kg if fever is above 100F.
-In case of high fever do sponging with tepid water.
-Give plenty of fluids to maintain hydration.

Get your child examined by pediatrician for proper management of underlying infection.

Hope I have answered your query, if you have any further question, I would be glad to help.

Wishing your child good health.
God bless!!

OK ThanQ. Later on we didn't observed such after that.
But the fever is still going on and off. its also not periodic. sometimes its coming after 20 hours or some times after 12 hours. Please let me know is there any chance of same old urinary infection coming back. ?

If it Is the case then what could be reason for these kind of urinery/blood infections ?? so that atleast we can prevent it ?

Hi,

Thanks for your follow up.

Good to hear that your baby is improving now and there was no further attack of any convulsions. The fever may take 3 to 4 days to settle. Continue with fluids, fruit juices, vegetable soup, fruit puree, rice porridge so as to maintain hydration and nutrition which will boost his immunity.

As you have mentioned that he has mild urinary infection at age of 9 months and was resolved there is nothing to worry. The current episode may or may not be related to recurrent symptoms persist you can get evaluated for recurrent urinary tract infection through urine culture and ultrasound abdomen.

Infections could be viral or bacterial and they can be prevented by increasing child's immunity by;
-proper diet.
-timely immunization.
-maintaining proper hygiene.

Since he had an episode of typical febrile seizure, chances of recurrence are there. It gradually decreases as age of child increases. So I suggest you to always keep paracetamol with you. In future whenever there is sudden rise in temperature give paracetamol and do tepid sponging.

If you need any further clarification,i would like to help.

Take care!!

ThanQ. !
One more problem forgott to mention in my previous information, He had a problem of colic initially second week of birth. All of sudden he starts crying and some time it last upto 1 hour. at some point of time while keeping him in shoulder soothing he releases gas either from mouth or from bottom and he immediatly stops crying.

When i enquired about that with doctor they told it will gradually get redduced as his digestive system improves. initially frequency was very high and recently it got reduced to very low. during last week it came so many times with in one week itself.

Thanks again.

As mentioned by you ,your child had infantile colic which usually starts by 3 weeks of age and settles by 4 months of age,it is benign and self limiting.

Colic which he experienced at age of 10 months could be related to some change of diet - as introduction of some new food item sometimes leads to indigestion leading to colic . It is usually seen with gas forming food items.

It could also be due to some gastrointestinal infection.

Let me know if there is anything else I can clarify.

God bless!!
