Is A 12F Catheter Advisable Over 16F Silicon Catheter?
Question: Been re-catheterised a number of times. Have latex allergy. I currently have a 16 chain silicon one in. Have now been prescribed a 12 chain for next time. When I had a twelve chain in before, the urine drained too slowly and it led to a collection in urine leading to infection and a lot of blood and debris. It also was painful and by passing of urine occurred.
Brief Answer:
16 F silicone catheter is the best suited size.
Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX and welcome to HCM.
As an Urologist, i fully understand your concern.
The present 16 F silicone catheter is standard size, used by all Urologists.
It drains well, and gets blocked, very infrequently. A 12 F catheter is best avoided.
Even bladder irrigations are easier, if needed. Some urine may leak, just ignore it.
The silicone catheter need be changed only, once in 3 months.
Also, they cause less tissue reactions. Maintain 8-10 glasses liquids daily.
Hope your doubts are cleared. Wish him well.
