Is Hip Replacement Advisable For Joint Effusion, Subcortical Cystic Change And Multiple Luncencies?

default
Posted on Fri, 26 Sep 2014
Question: I am being told that I need a hip replacement at 50 years old. MRI says joint effusion, 8mm intra-articular osteochondral body, small dysplastic bump, significant subcortical cystic change, marginal osteophytosis, subcentimeter degenerative subchondral cyst(acetabulum). x-ray say's multiple luncencies, (pubic symphysis, intratrochanteric L. hip femoral head and acetabulum. I am a massage therapist on my feet all day lunging, reaching pulling from waist , twisting at hip, bending forward. I have started to have significan t pain on my long days.
Is this a reasonable decision. also the term lucencies scares me as my brother died from multiple myoloma.
Sorry this is such a long question.

Brief Answer:
You should get hip replacement done

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your MRI report and clinical features and I believe that you need hip replacement surgery. It will help in your pain relief and normal mobility. There are some limitation though , first you will not be able to squat and sit cross leg. You have to use a chair or stool for sitting.
Other limitation is that you will not able to run or walk very fast. As it will decrease life of hip replacement. Any way a hip replacement has life of 10 to 20 years and after that you might need a repeat surgery.
So if you are ready for these adjustment in your life, then you should go ahead with this procedure.
I hope this answer will be useful for you. Let me know if there is any other followup question is there.
Thanks
