Is It Necessary To Take Calcium Supplements At 54 Years Of Age?
My mother is 54 years old. She has no medical issues and is in good health. But someone suggested that women after the age of 40 should take calcium tablets in order to protect the health of their bones. I was just curious to know how true is that. And if it is reccomended then what supplements are available in the market that she can take.
Thanks.
Thanks for writing.
Yes calcium supplements are necessary in a female especially after menopause (cessation of periods).
This is because the hormone estrogen which is produced by the ovaries in regular monthly cycles becomes deficient after menopause. This causes increased chances of bone resorption (wear and tear) leading to weak bones. So calcium supplements ensure bone strengthening which in turn reduces chances of bone pains and fractures.
Also females during reproductive age, have a tendency of calcium deficiency due to repeated pregnancies and child birth.
There is no harm in taking these supplements provided your mother has no history of renal disease or kidney stones.
There are a variety of calcium supplements available, any can be used, some of which are Shelcal, corcium, osteocal, calcinol etc.
take care.
