Is It Normal To Have Pain In Leg While Suffering From Varicose Veins?

default
Posted on Sat, 19 Sep 2015
Question: Hi. I am 77 years old, have had type II diabetes for 27 years which is being controlled by oral meds and about 10 to 15 units of insulin at night if necessary. I have varicose veins in my left leg. My question is: with varicose veins is it normal to have a 'hurt' feeling (not really pain but hurts, when I touch my leg with my finger and at night I have hurting legs with some kind of muscle spasms between my knee and ankle. Quite bad sometimes but when I put my foot on the floor it goes away usually.

Brief Answer:
Yes, its one of the possible presentation

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Yes, this presentation is possible with varicose veins and associated thrombophlebitis. Diabetic neuropathy due to long standing diabetes mellitus is also a possibility. Neurological examination of the feet and a Doppler ultrasound of the lower limb would provide conclusive evidence to treat these symptoms on vascular or neurological basis. Gabapentin, B 12, calcium and vitamin D supplementation, muscle relaxants can be advised if its related to diabetic neuropathy and varicose veins and no vascular pathology is detected.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
