Is It Possible To Continue Pregnancy Post Cervix Dilation?
Question: Hi, thought of aborting the pregnancy and went to a doctor.
he told that my wife is 13 weeks pregnant and told to do dilation procedure (not sure if its D&C or D&E)
so he kept stick and did dilation yesterday. my wife is in dilation now. I am now thinking to not do the D&C or D&E procedure and continue pregnancy. Is this possible after dilation? Or the pregnancy would have already got aborted due to dilation procedure. Also note that the doctor told that we cannot choose to keep the baby after dilation. Is this a just a business intent or bcos the pregnancy would already be aborted?

Brief Answer:
Depends on the status of cervical os dilatation.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to HCM.
I can understand your concerns for your wife.
Unfortunately, after dilating cervix it is difficult to continue pregnancy (if the stick has worked and cervical os got open).
If you will not go for D&C or D&E, pregnancy eventually will end up in abortion.
There are chances of transmission of infection, rupture of membrane(bag).
So consult with your gynecologist to know the status of dilatation cervical os (As dilatation might be slow in first pregnancy).
If dilation has already occurred, its better to proceed with D&C or D&E.
Hope it helps.
Feel free to ask further.
I wish good health for your wife.
Thanks.

Dr. XXXXXXX ,
Thanks for the prompt reply. Some forums / doctors say if the stick removed within a particular time, it might be ok for pregnancy though telling there could be some complications.
But I am very scared to back off now, thinking about the impact this dilation could have caused.
so its probably safer to continue with the procedure ?
Also the dilation was done yesterday at 9am and not its already past 24 hrs.
we have the appointment at 12:30 pm today.
This is her 2nd pregnancy so i am afraid for anything now...

Brief Answer:
proceed with termination of pregnancy.
Detailed Answer:
You are most welcome.
I really understand what you are going through at present.
As this is second pregnancy, the dilatation would have been relatively earlier.
So, my advise for you is:
If the dilatation has occured (which probably would have occured by now as its her second pregnancy), she should proceed with abortion.
There is always risk of complications if the pregnancy is continued in such cases.
I understand it would be hard time for both of you. But it would be a wise decision, considering the risk of future complications.
I would always be available here for your help in all possible ways, if the need be.
Take care.
Thanks.
