Is It Safe To Switch From Lucentis To Avastin For Macular Degeneration?

Question: Team,

My Father in law (71 Yrs) has been diagnosed with AMD and has taken 3 (R2, L1) injections of Lucentis so far. He has been asked to take 3 more injections.

Is it safe to change from Lucentis to Avastin. Apart from cost difference, are there any benefits / side effects in continuing or changing this medicine. Please advise.

Brief Answer:
I advice you to continue with lucentis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care magic

I am Dr. DADAPEER K, an Ophthalmologist and I answer health problems related to eye.

I reviewed your history.

Lucentis also called as Ranibizumab is approved drug for treatment of wet age related macular degeneration.
Avastin also called as Bevacizumab is approved only for use in colorectal cancer and its use in age related macular degeneration is off label as a cheaper alternative.

Both the drugs are effective but side effects are less with lucentis.
Hence wherever patients are affordable I prefer to use lucentis over avastin.

Hence I advice you to continue with lucentis if affordability is not a problem.
Lucentis is better and should be preferrred and there are no side effects in continuing lucentis.

Hope I have answered your question and the information is helpful to you.

Thank you
