Is It Safe To Take Ketones By A Type 1 Diabetic?

default
Posted on Fri, 20 Feb 2015
Question: I have been a type 1 diabetic for 18 years. I am currently on a strict diet and exercise routine, and although my blood sugars are perfect (haven't went over 140), my ketones are anywhere from small to large throughout the day. I've researched a lot about how low carb diets can cause ketones in urine. If my BS stays perfect, is it okay to have ketones? I am certain I am well hydrated as well.

Brief Answer:
Ketones are a marker of starvation and/or low insulin!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

Ketones are produced when glucose cannot be used for energy production. This happens when there is a lack of insulin(in this case the blood sugar would be high...Not in your case) or starvation. Have you been eating enough? I am afraid you may be eating very little that makes your body to be in a state of starvation.

My advise is that you eat regularly, take insulin as recommended and control to make sure all is okay.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

Thank you! I don't think my body could be low on insulin since I take my lantus regularly and I take novolog when I eat. I just wanted to make sure that it was safe for my body to have ketones and higher ketones since I'm dieting. My diet has been pretty restricted with higher protein and lower carb which I had read can cause ketones. I had just read mixed information about whether or not it was ever okay for diabetics to ever have ketones. I feel great though but wanted to make sure they weren't harmful for my body while I'm losing weight.
